Mary Cassatt: Oil Pastel Work


Materials:

  • 12x18” white construction paper

  • Oil pastels

  • Pencils

  • Black permanent markers

  • Tempera paint in blues and greens for the final wash

  • Paintbrushes

  • Bug Patterns

Aesthetics:

  1. What do you think of Cassatt's work in oil?

  2. What kinds of effect are you able to notice in her work?

  3. Would you call her work realistic or abstract? Why?

Scribe Notes for March 6, 2010

House Keeping Issues:

-Concern for missing items in buildings Q and T; please keep in mind that items & supplies are for use only in the classrooms. No pocketing!
-E-portfolio can be burned onto a disc or saved on a flash drive.
-Marvin brought up a suggestion for the E-portfolio: instead of typing out descriptions, comparisons, & etc. make use of Windows Movie Maker and record your voices in replacement of typed content.

What did we do today?

-Welcome guest Marley Rankin, daughter of Doug Ranking.
-Marvin, Patrick & Ken described their print out of Doug Rankin's paintings.
-Powerpoint presentation on Doug Ranking.
-Following the powerpoint, Ms. Marley briefly demonstrated the technique of using parts of the banana tree to create a painting. Thanks Ms. Marley!



-After the demonstration, the class tried out the newly learned technique from about 9:30 to 10:45. I saw what we created, good job guys! :)
-10:45 to 11:00 was cleanup and break time.
-Next was Chapter 7 presentation by Winnie, Roque & Victorette.
-No time left for next chapter presentation so that will be done on March 20, 2010.
-At the end of the class, Ms. Kathy described our assignment called "Field Experience". Description of Field Experience assignment:
-Look at local artists' artwork. Such paintings can be found at the old Len's 5 Tavern for Doug Rankin's work, Hyatt Regency Hotel Saipan for Connie Adam's artwork & Duty Free Galleria for Greg Elliot's artwork.
-You can also ask Efran (spelling?) Camacho to see his collection of Doug Rankin's artwork.
-Don't forget to take a picture of yourself with the art piece.
-You can also interview an artist.
-You can also visit the Thursday street market to take a look at the artwork there.
-Write a reflection on your field experience.
-This assignment will be due March 20, 2010

-No class next Saturday, March 13, 2010
-Midterm on March 27, 2010
-Get started on your E-portfolio
-Field Experience reflection and picture due on March 20, 2010

Scribe Notes for February 13, 2010

Class Discourse:

I. Agenda was passed out & reviewed
II. Class Responsibilities: were reviewed. Pls add Nadia as a TimeKeeper.
III. Announcements:


  • Email Re: Art Kit: Ms. Kathy shared what she sent on the email re: art kits from the bookstore. She also showed what the art kit consists of. She let everyone know that the art kit contains materials that are going to be just enough for the semester and maybe leftover for future classrooms. She hopes that although not all will get the art kits, she hopes that all will have the materials they need to successfully complete art assignments.

  • Independent Study: Ms. Kathy shared that some students wanted to learn more about the artists and their work so she is offering an Independent Study that will focus in-depth into the artist's lives and their works. If anyone else is interested, they can see her for more info.

  • Observations: Kathy encouraged all to make sure to get their observations done and not wait till the last minute. Observations are due on Feb. 27.

  • Chapter TeachBacks: Pls. see handout on Group Lesson Plan Project for requirements and rubric. Chapter presentation groupings are as follows:

IV. Icebreaker: No one presented an icebreaker, so Connie shared an icebreaker. She asked if there was anyone celebrating a birthday soon. Everyone sang Happy Birthday replacing the first letter of every word with an R for Roque's birthday...Rappy Rirthday Ru Rou...Rappy Rirthday Roque...[Funny :)]
V. Art Aesthetic Discussion: Students posted finished Klee-inspired artwork. Shawna, Alvin and Connie shared their artwork.
VI. Chapter 2 & 3 Gallery Walk: [Instructional Strategy!]Class was divided into 4 groups who worked on assigned topics from Chapters 2 & 3. After groupwork, groups posted work. Groups went around classroom looking at the posted groupwork and posting comments/questions with post-it notes. After all groups got a chance to look at other's work, groups explained work and concepts of chapters and answered questions from post it notes.
VII. Picasso & Matisse: Ms. Kathy presented a video on book " When Pigasso met Mootisse" from internet site: www.storylineonline.net [Site has several books on video..Useful!] Because of the interest of time, the Picasso PPT will be presented next class.
VIII. Picasso & Matisse Artwork Creation. Students were given time to work on assignments. Ms. Kathy showed a PPT on the instructions for creating a Matisse-inspired artwork.
X. Quiz #2: Complete and Submit.
